Welcome to our Sunday morning devotion and prayer time! In last week’s devotion, we introduced the book that we will going through for our next series. The book is titled, I AM A CHURCH MEMBER – Discovering the Attitude that Makes the Difference, written by Thom S. Rainer. I hope you have invested in buying your own book to read and study on your own.
Review: Introduction – A Tale Of Two Church Members✓ The Difference: attitude, how we see things, how we react to things✓ The Journey: 1-A new, or renewed attitude about our church, 2-Our church will begin to change
Q: In the Introduction, why do you think one of the men decided to leave the church?
A: It seems like he was not happy there. He was focusing on everything that was wrong.
Q: Do you agree with the sentence that begins, “God placed us in churches to…?”
A: I hope our answer is a strong YES! 😊
Today’s Devotion: Chapter 1 – I Will Be a Functioning Church Member(part 1) You are going to find that the sub-chapter titles are actually commitments that we, together, will be declaring. At the end of each chapter, there will be an actual “pledge”; if you have the book, you will see there is a place for you to sign and date. I will be choosing 1 of the “Questions for Study” at the end of each devotion.
Membership Means …
…We Are All Necessary Parts Of The Whole In 1 Cor. 12, Paul explains the metaphor of the church being a body with many members. In 1 Cor. 13, he established love as the central attitude and action all members should have. Let’s take time to read 1 Cor. 13 together.
…We Are Different but We Still Work Together With church membership, everyone has a role or function. Each part, therefore, has to do its work, or the whole body suffers – 1 Cor. 12:26.
Question: Explain why church membership is a biblical concept, using 1 Cor. 12 as your biblical foundation. (You can answer this individually, or take time together as a family) Let’s be ready to share with each other next Sunday. (Sorry… questions are going to be just a little bit harder… that’s how we “grow and mature” in our walks with the Lord!)
Next week >>> Chapter 1 – I Will Be a Functioning Church Member(part 2)
Let’s pray: Thank You, Father, for Your clear direction for Your church as a whole. As we continue learning about ourselves, where we are at, where You want us to be, help us to be tender to Your Holy Spirit as You speak to our hearts. Help us always to be mindful of the part in the Body of Christ that we are responsible for, and stir us constantly so that we will maintain our part as a church member. May we always keep love in the forefront the way that 1 Cor. 13 describes in Your Word. We continue to pray for those who are in need during this time, those who are without jobs, those who are sick, those who have lost loved ones – may each one experience your tender mercy, grace, healing, provision, and unconditional love. We continue to pray for our unsaved loved ones. Also, all unspoken needs, we place at Your feet; may Your perfect will be done. We pray a special blessing upon all mothers this day. May we show appreciation for all they do, for who they are, and for their influence in our lives. We love You. We give You glory, honor, and praise. In Jesus’ name, amen.
